Advent

Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. It is a time of relection and preparation for the implications of the Festival of Christmas.

It is a time of looking forward to the birth of Jesus, but it is also a time for reflecting upon his promise to come again at the end of time. Much is made of the theological theme of light and dark, and indeed traditionally a wreath is set up in the church with five candles. One being lit on each of Advent's four Sundays, and the fifth being lit on Christmas Day itself.

Traditionally the priest wears purple vestments at this time.

Within the benefice our normal pattern of services are followed, but often it is also a time when in the lead up to Christmas Carol Services take place.
